Montignac (Lascaux) (92 km) Discovered in 1940 and arranged for visit in 1948, this cave stands at the forefront of the prehistoric sites in Europe by the number and quality of its paintings. The cave was closed to the public for conservation reasons in 1963. Twenty years later, in order to meet visitor’s needs, a facsimile-project opened its doors. There, the reliefs are rendered in great detail, and the polychrome paintings are drawn exactly as they were 17.000 years ago, with natural dyes. Located only 200 m from the original cave, the facsimile offers a remarkable reconstruction of the upper part of the cavern. |
